Hygge Haven Journal

Journal Design, Branding, Exhibition

The Danish concept of hygge is more than an ordinary word, it is a concept of coziness and content that is deeply rooted in Scandinavian culture and the Danish lifestyle. Inspired by my time spent studying abroad in Denmark, I created the Hygge Haven journal and exhibition space.

The Hygge Haven journal invites individuals to learn about the concept of hygge and discover ways they can incorporate hygge into their daily lives. The journal includes interactive prompts for multiple individuals write or draw in, as well as reflect upon. The design of the journal includes engaging illustrations and soft, muted colors that makes it inviting and appealing for all. The Hygge Haven exhibition space invites individuals to experience hygge wrapped up in a blanket and in a cozy environment while engaging with the journal.

What is hygge?

Hygge (“hyoo-guh”), is the Danish concept that encapsulates a relaxing atmosphere of coziness and comfortability.

Hygge is typically enjoyed with friends and family with elements like dim lighting, cozy blankets, and easy-going conversation. The hygge lifestyle likes to shine a spotlight on the simple joys and happiness in life.

HYGGE MANIFESTO

When ideating on the concept of hygge, I found inspiration in the book called, “Little Book of Hygge” by Meik Wiking. Within the book, Wiking describes the 10 main themes that come together to create the Hygge Manifesto and the concept of hygge.

The Hygge Haven journal is framed around the 10 main themes as identified by Wiking. I created unique and cohesive icons for each of the individual themes. The icons are unified with a consistent illustrative style and color scheme. Each theme is broken out into individual spreads to learn more about the theme with interactive prompts.
